Crows on the Wire is a dynamic new app, superbly illustrated in contemporary comic book style and set in stunning 3D scenarios.  The app is a graphic novel version of the original drama by Jonathan Burgess, commissioned in 2013 by the Verbal Arts Centre.

The Crows on the Wire App tells the human story behind the political events of the night of 3rd November 2001 – a pivotal historical moment when the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) transitioned into the PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland).

The app is also an innovative educational resource, and contains a range of interactive and easily accessible resources designed to stimulate young people to consider how the past influences the present, and to explore themes such as cultural identity, sectarianism, conflict, change, commemoration, equality and the role of the younger generation. The app is particularly aimed at teachers of History and Citizenship at KS4, and will be of interest to teachers of English and Drama.

The app was launched on 15th September 2014 at the Verbal Arts Centre.  Welcoming the new app, Justice Minister David Ford said: : “I applaud the Crows on the Wire project, their new app paints a very personal picture through the eyes of those at the front line of the conflict, and offers a very innovative educational resource about a difficult issue. Their commitment and participation in developing this innovative approach to exploring challenging and sensitive areas of our past and indeed, our present is very commendable.”

Speaking at the launch of the app, Pat Colgan, Chief Executive of the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), which manages the EU’s PEACE III Programme, said:

“This app is an excellent medium through which people, particularly young people, can engage with and learn more about the Crows on the Wire project. As an educational and story-telling resource it will prove invaluable in highlighting an important chapter in our shared past. I congratulate all involved in its production and look forward to hearing more about its impact going forward.”
